You can find out about the sc

You can find out about the school and the other programs run by the Hetrick-Martin Institute at www.hmi.org.

I visited HMI once, just to see everything they did. It seems like a good, healing space. The school is just one of several outreach programs they offer.

There's also one in Dallas, TX

MTV did a special on that school. I think it was part of the "True Life" series. That's all I remember about it though.

Coincidence

Well, I was reading Gay.com this morning and I found the name of the gay high school in Dallas that I was looking for. It's called Walt Whitman, and its closing. Here's a link to the article: http://www.gay.com/news/article.html?2003/08/11/4

And here's a related story on Harvey Milk and the New Yahk gay high school that will be named after him: http://www.gay.com/news/article.html?2003/08/11/3

Whitman

Walt Whitman is closing????? Bleh why

Closing

Walt Whitman is closing because of low enrollment (at the time I saw the MTV show).

Hmmm...

I don't know, though... I don't like the idea of alienation. I mean, why can't we work to reform from within the system? Why can't there be more outreach programs after school or something?

Maybe I'm just afraid of change. Or maybe, because I'm bi, I don't feel like I would fit in there 100%, and that just adds to the feelings of isolation and loneliness. I could even be jealous because I went through highschool in continuous denial and didn't let myself just be, like these kids will be able.

Or maybe D) All of the above.

support the school -- any interest?

If you're in the NYC area, come support the Harvey Milk School on the first day of classes tomorrow. The NYU contingent is meeting at Washington Square and marching up, and I think a couple of other groups will also be on hand to protest the protesters who are coming to harass the kids. (Phelps and co. are coming out here from Kansas.)

It starts at 7, 7:30 am; the school is at 2 Astor Place. Show up if you're interested.

Harvey Milk

I dunno about that school-I mean it's cool, and all, but it's kind of like reverse evolution, isn't it. Like, seprate but equal? I go to a regular public school in NYC -Stuyvesant- and our GSA rocks, and gblt kids don't suffer too much here-Harvey Milk seems like segregation. I gotta admit, though, it would rock to go there
