Roomate trouble

biguy87's picture

Help!
My roommate is the biggest homophobe i've ever met! He constantly spouts anti-GBLT stuff, his idea of a good expression of frustration is "Gay Butt Sex" and he always refers to gays as fags. Any suggestions would be most appreiciated.
Thanks
Josh

Definitely do something about it.

Ask the powers that be to have a different roommate. Or if you're feeling really activistic and brave you can come out to him and tell him to screw himself. He might shut up if you could convince him that you could bring guys into your room every night if he doesn't. Or that you'd put up posters of bare-(chested) guys on your walls.

I'd switch rooms ASAP. You don't need to be around that shit.

My dark side agrees with what Paladin suggested, but as far as I know, you probably can switch rooms if he's making you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Perhaps if you came out to him, he would want to switch rooms and then you wouldn't have to. However, your best bet is to just go to whoever is in charge of the dorms and tell him you're bi and you have a homophobic roommate. If you can't switch rooms, then just confront him, telling him you have a gay brother or something, and that you find his remarks offensive.

On the other hand, the guy is a freshman, right? If so, then you should know that being in college tends to disarm a lot of bigoted beliefs that people have, and if this guy wants to be successful, then he'll have to learn to be tolerant. Otherwise, he might just end up like those people who flunk out and then blame it on their teachers who were "mean" because they assigned too much work.

Absolutely. That's what RAs are for. Make them work for their free room and board for a change.

This is a great point too. I guess the question you need to ask is "do I give a shit about this person?" Is your roommate basically decent but ignorant, or is he just an asshole? In other words, do you want to invest the time and emotional energy to try and help this guy come around? If so, good for you, and I wish you the best of luck, it's a worthy goal. If not, fuck it. Sometimes the inevitable conclusion is that there's just too many assholes in the world to try and fix them all.

Hmm...

Is he cute?

Some of today's biggest homophobes are tomorrow's biggest fags.

Re: Hmm...

That's an excellent point, and I think there is scientific evidence to back that up.

Score some booze, get drunk with him (alone, of course), put on some really arousing porno and see what happens. One of the advantages to being bi is that it gives you access that we homos don't normally have...

... or you can just switch rooms.

Actually, it could be BAD NEW

Actually, it could be BAD NEWS if you tried to hit on him, though the look on his face would be priceless. But seriously, that could get you into a lot of trouble. I would tell him that you're bi and then if he takes it badly, switch rooms. If he takes it well, then you're fine.
