Anti-gay Amendment

Do you have a flag's picture

Hey, i just looked at the poll today and saw this thing about the anti-gay amendment. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but there's something in the name that makes me think its anti-homosexual! I was just wondering if any of you could clue me up on what it is, and tell me why it's in place. I live in Britain (the land of dreams!), were gays and lesbians have rights! Thanx Sam xxx

Mr Bushy

IF Bush can't handle seeing gays and lesbians marry in his own country then he obviously has something to hide! What do you think? Sorry for rubbing it your faces, didn't mean to. Why not move to Britain, the weather may be bad, but guns are outlawed and there's a Primeminister rather than a president! Sounds a lot better lol!

Do you have a flag?

What do you mean do we have a flag?
We live here!
We don't need a flag!

No flag no country!
Those are the rules, I just made up!

I wish

Yes, the amendment is to "protect the sanctity of marriage" read not let GLBTQ people get married. I read the actual text and it seems to say that nobody can force a state to let GLBTQ people get married, but the state can decide for itself. The main argument I have heard in support of the amendment is that it is an "act of love to keep same-gender couples from marrying." That is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard!

Act of love?????

Okay, If it was an act of love, gay people could still get married, right???

anti-gay amendment

I live in Indiana, one of the most conservative states in the US. Conservative Christians, ideological descendants of the psychotic Puritans your country was absolutely right to kick out but unfortunately had to send our way (they should have been sent to Antarctica, in my opinion), have successfully had several states' constitutions amended to define marriage as beng between a man and a woman. Our state appears to be next on the list.

The problem with these amendments is that unlike laws, they can't be declared unconstitutional and struck down by state supreme courts. The only hope is to have them struck down by the US Supreme Court, but with the Supreme Court populated by conservative fuckwits like Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, that is unlikely.

Technically speaking, this should be illegal. According to the First Amendment, we have a separation of church and state ("Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..."). Unfortunately, the Constitution was written in the 18th century and uses the pretentious and overly erudite language popular at the time, making the wording sometimes very vague. Additionally, the Religious Right consists of people with fundamentally undemocratic values; if they had their way, I honestly believe that the US would look like a Christian version of Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Constitional Ammendments

I really don't know what ammendment it was (I believe the first) it said "The right to LIFE, LIBERTY and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS." A gey persons life IS being Homosexual. It is their liberty to do so and live their life that way. Keeping the Homosexuals of America from being wed is taking away their pursuit of happiness, right? Just a question...........

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its plain and simple legalized bigotry. It follows on the principal that gays will destroy marrage, like reality Tv shows havent done that already. besides, I think there is a line in our pledge that says LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!!! But with the rise of Bush, king of the trailer park red necks Freedom is just a word to trick us into going to war and making an excuse for telling the UN to practically go fuck themselves....Discracefull and it makes me ashamed to to call myself an American. Argg he is so ignorant, he acts as though we are the only democrasy on earth while pushing the Patriot act which stabs the bill of rights in the heart.

Definition of 'marriage'

Basically, Bush has openly advocated amending the U. S.'s constitution to define marriage as between '1 man and 1 woman'. Some versions would ban all legal recognition of gay couples (a la civil unions/domestic partnerships).
It's backed by the ultra-right-wing evangelical theocrats and neofascists, but is not likely to pass- it has neither sufficient support in Congress nor among the American public, which is sane enough to overwhelmingly back either marriage equality or civil unions (63% in February).
Bush knows it won't pass- however, it provides a convenient enough 'wedge issue' to mobilize his base, further divide the populace, and exploit religion for Republican electoral gain.
Also, it's unconstitutional under the equal protection guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

Supreme Court

If Bush and the Rest of the GOP get tehir and get another 2 or 3 judges in the Supreme Court before the end of his term, the amendent just might pass, but if it fails, it will make way for LOTS AND LOTS of pro-gay laws to be put forth.

What difference is there?

John Kerry opposed marriage eqality. So did John Edwards. So does Senate Minority Leader Reid. I should support that?
Right now, the Democrats are so desperate to get the fundamentalist Christian constituency that there are no substantial differences between them and the GOP.
