"Gay Like Me"?

haNa's picture

I'm sure a lot of you are farmiliar with 'Black like me' (if not, it was a book written by a white journalist who dyed his skin black, traveled the south in 60s and wrote about how people treated him...) and now they're doing a 'Fat like Me', I've seen somethings like 'Muslim Like Me' (though they weren't titled that)... So, I've been wondering if there is a 'Gay like Me'? While there are TONS of documentaries about gay life, I haven't really seen one about the everday discrimination.
But I haven't really researched it tons...

If there isn't one, someone needs to do it.

So, anyone know if there is one?

wow...

You should write one. Black Like Me is an awesome book and you have a great idea there.

We should make a book

We should make a book ourselves! Every oasisian writes a chapter about every day discrimitation, we compile it... ^.^ sounds like fun. Sounds like a forum topic?

Good Idea.

Good idea. If you guys want to do that in the Clubhouse Forum, I can help you out. It would be a good exercise. I also can help you publish it if you decide you want to.

I was trying to think up a writing project for the forum, and I think this would be a great one. Everyone could do it in any way they liked, as a regular expository piece, as a story, a poem, or even artwork. Gay, bi, trans experiences all welcome. What do you guys think about that?

RSVP

If anyone would seriously like to work on this, reply to this post so I can see how many might be willing to participate. Oh, and say if you're an artist, writer, or whatever. We'll just take the pulse of the room and see if there's enough interest to move ahead with it.

P.S. This should not be confused with the Samers Guild Project, which is entirely different.

If you are already working

This is supposed to be a reply to my own comment. Oh well.

If you are already working or planning to work on the Samers Guild Project, there's no reason you can't do this too. Just be careful when budgeting your time so your school work gets done too. :-)~

I'm way in, and willing to

I'm way in, and willing to edit. It'd be cool if it was uplifting, a little. With each section being about the safe places, encouragement, and love we found. It could be called... "Oasis." It could be very uplifting, I think. There's enough depressing GLTB literature out there.

patnelsonchilds's picture

I say both

I think we should try and strike a balance. We don't want to ignore the fact that gay teens have a pretty rough time out there. On the other hand, we also want to show that there is hope and there are resources out there for them.

No, I don't dissagree. But I

No, I don't dissagree. But I want to strike a balance. There's so much angst out there about glbt youth... and you know what? People get that. What people don't always see is that are are safe places, there is hope out there. Just a thought. Maybe every person could do two chapters... one that displays the angst, and one, to follow up, about the safe spaces.

Well, I think we basically

Well, I think we basically agree about that. I'd say that the contributor should be free to address the issue the in whatever way they see fit. However, we should put into the guidelines that we definitely want those who have benefitted from helpful gay youth resources to share them in their contribution. In the editing process, if you find that things are slanting too negatively, you can balance it out with some additions of your own, or by making some suggestions for change to the contributors. That way people don't feel as though they're being restricted right off the bat. Just an idea.

Wow.

You, haNa, are...well, simply put, brilliant.

I wrote a lot of poetry in the past, and I participate in NaNoWriMo every year, which I suppose makes me count as a writer. I'd really love to be involved with this.

NEXT STEP

Ok, here's what I'll do to try and get this organized a little: I'm going to put a fresh posting on the Clubhouse forum for people to formally sign up, with a few questions for everyone to answer like how you would like to contribute to the project. That way we can start putting a list together.
I think we should form a committee of say five people who will kind of set up some guidelines for the project, not to restrict people, but to help them get a sense of what to focus on and so forth. I'll be happy to just help you guys get started, and then step back and let you run with it. So look for a posting entitled "Gay Like Me Project" on the Clubhouse forum, probably tonight, and we can get this thing moving.

Does that sound okay? Let me know. You're the ones in charge.

Ok, if everyone that has said they are interested here, please go here and sign up officially:

At some point I'll just transpose everyone onto the other list, but it would be easier if you all replied to the Sign-up post.

We seem to be tilting very heavily female and genderqueer here. I've got no problem with that, but it would be nice to get the gay/bi boy perspective too. CALLING ALL BOYS! Helloooooo!!!!
