Gay Like Me - Some Topic Ideas

Anonymous's picture

I was thinking of how this book might lay out this morning and it occurred to me that we're bound to wind up with certain categories which will lend themselves well to being chapters in the book. It also occurred to me that if we can brainstorm some of these catagories in advance, it may help people to come up with things to write (or do artwork) about.

I can think of two right away:

1. Coming out (and the difficulties it presents)
2 .Crushing on Straight Boys/Girls

What other topics can you guys think of that are kind of "Everyteen" issues? Of course some may overlap, but that's okay. This is just an exercise to get the creative juices flowing. Ew, that sounds kind of icky doesn't it? Let's just say it's brainwork.

Remember, this is just for ideas. You can write about any and all (or none) of them if you want.

Maybe something like "meeting other gay people" etc. or something to do with religion, like coming to terms with how your spirituality and sexuality combine.

perhaps something on labels, there could be great artwork for that.

also, if this is including the gender issues, a chapter on that as well.

i would also suggest a glossary of terms in the back of the book. we throw around a lot of terms that many people aren't familiar with. We could even find the dictionary definitions for the terms, but then also define them ourselves, how we use them.

I don't really think it's

I don't really think it's the kind of thing that you just, pick a topic and write about it. Everyone's life has a different theme, right? I mean, that's my take on it. =)

Whatever I did, I didn't do it.

I think people should think

I think people should think outside of the box. Like pick something that at first has nothing to do with being gay but in the end has everything to do with it. Does that make sense?

yeah, it's probably better to think about how to order the contributions later. Otherwise this will constrain the creativity, and limit the diversity of contributions.

This is Just an Exercise

I believe I said right in my original post: "this is just for ideas. You can write about any and all (or none) of them if you want."

So give me a break. It is not a "constraint on creativity". You're missing the point, which is just to toss the topics around and generate ideas. I'm going to decide later how to arrange the book.

Anyway, those of you who would like to participate, please continue to suggest topics. Some others may find it helpful. Those who don't want to don't have to.

Pat, calm down. Talking

Pat, calm down. Talking about topic ideas is a good idea. We need an energetic forum like that to get slice-of-life-esque/etc. stories. No one's attacking you. The way you phrased the forum did sound kind of like book topics, so it was confusing. No one was really attacking you. Everyone needs to listen to each other if this book is gonna happen.

I think it might be a good

I think it might be a good idea to split the book into sections however i think that many stories may over lap so it might be difficult but it is a good idea because if someone wants some help about coming out they can flip to that part to get some inspiration etc.

Being the only single gay

Being the only single gay kid in your school, I am not sure if that is common but I guess it comes with the search for a companion.

Gay community

Any interactions (or lack of them) with any part of the gay community would have to go in. Whether its one other guy, or a SF gaybar. And the good side and the wankers. What is the image people get of the gay community - what does the average gay teen think of things like gay pride?

here's an idea

how about writing as a straight kid who, after going through some certain events, makes a huge turnaround by realizing that gay people arent any different than straight people? i mean, i know its called "Gay Like Me" but i think we should put some material in it so it will appeal to straight people, too. right? just a suggestion.

The main focus of this

The main focus of this project is to create a book by, for and about young gay (bi, tran, queer, ie. other than straight) people (and I think also their parents). A straight point of view would be fine, but don't think we want to hold the door open for a flood of this type of contribution. Besides just the book itself, this project is designed to offer a sense of belonging, which is one thing that so many gay kids often lack. To throw the doors open to everyone would, frankly, dilute the whole special nature of the project. What I would say is that all are welcome to submit. It will be up to the editors to strike the proper tone and balance in order to capture the essence of our project.

Maybe we can set up a set of questions and ask some gay youth and see how they perceive things like coming out (effects), gay marriage, AIDS, depression etc. etc. etc. and then write an article on it?

Well, we're open to all

Well, we're open to all kinds of submissions, so if that's something you'd like to do, by all means go for it.
