Want to review books for Oasis?

As we're finally about to get the launch up and running properly (should be switching to a new server very soon, breaking out oasisjournals.com, etc.), one piece of the puzzle is also going to be book reviews.

With me working on my own novel, this is definitely the area where I need help, since I can't read a ton when I'm working on my stuff. So, the deal is... reply to this post if you are interested in reviewing books for Oasis.

I will still read and review books of authors I intend to interview and/or are coming through San Francisco in the near future, but there are a LOT of books that fall outside that narrow guideline.

The main consideration, for now, is that you have to be able to receive packages in the mail from me with books that may clearly be VERY gay in content. So, if you're closeted and living at home, this may not be a good idea, as I'm not shipping them in a way that will let you know exactly when they will arrive.

More details will follow, but reply here if you're interested or have any questions.

I'm interested if I can have a say in the choice of books I'd review.

Hmm...

There is no cost. You get a free book, you write one review. End of transaction. I pay to ship the book to you.

Yeah...

Yeah, that'd be really cool. I'm totally interested. I love being able to say what I think about something, and hey, free books! That's a great idea, by the way, getting the members in on it.

Depends...

Do you mean buying them, or working through the publishers? I am going to be sending out query letters to the various gay publishers this coming week, so I'd rather remain the single point of contact.

As for buying them, you can, but... why, if you can get them for free?

When i was in NYC, I ended up seeing three shows with review tickets for Oasis, and a fourth that my mother paid for. Three will get reviewed in Oasis. :-)

My only other concern is that, since the site has advertising now (although still less than it should, and bringing in next to nothing), I want to be clear about how people help Oasis with content. If I give you a book and you review it, and you get to keep the book, that is all above board. But if you end up buying book on your own dime, reviewing them, and then I (in some future world) make money because there are ads on your review, that could become problematic. That's my only additional concern.

i was just going to use ones

i was just going to use ones i already had or get them from the library, i'm semi-out to my mom, i just don't want her getting nosy about oasis, or to have to talk about things i'm not ready to talk about. if getting them myself doesn't work its okay, i'll just review some other time.

No...

That will totally be fine, we'll just have to make sure you aren't duplicating effort with someone else.

My main thing is being fair, especially with the thing about the ads on the site now (which I'm using to try and support my novel writing). I like that the reviewers will be getting free books to keep in exchange for their review, sort of balances it out karmically, whereas you're just putting in your time with no "reward," basically, and your review will then have ads on it that may eventually support me. That is my only concern.

Im in :]

That would be awesome!! Im not out but my parents dont open my mail so its all good. When do you think this should all start with the new oasis?

jeff's picture

A few issues...

First, I have to tell publishers to start sending me books.

Second, I have to figure out which authors I should interview if/when they come through San Francisco (or NYC, when I move in a few months), as I should read their book if I intend to chat with them.

Third, on the tech side, I need to work with Adrian, so that anyone interested in this gets their account flagged somehow so that you see an additional forum, where I will post what books I have here, and people can agree to review them. The catch there will be you can't pick a second book until you review the first, as we don't want someone with a stack of books they didn't get around to reviewing yet.

Fourth, the reviews will be lightly edited and make sure they adhere to certain guidelines (which will be posted in the hidden forum, etc.; just basic stuff like describing the book in a way that you don't ruin the whole plot, etc., which is rather common in book reviews).

It's an ongoing process. I'd say we should have books ready to be reviewed by
mid-February? (I have 2-3 here now).

HECK YES

I'm not out at home but my mom doesn't pay attention when things come in the mail for me or if i tell her i'm review books for a "thing" she won't care. That and i think she already knows i'm a lesbian because if you look at some of my books its just obvious because i have read every gay book i can get my hand on which isn't much because well out local bookstore sucks.
just have a few questions some are just stupid but i have to ask anyway. Are you willing to ship outside of just the US? Like say ONtario??lol can we keep the books? What kind of genre like i understand about gay topics and such but teen? adult? etc..
~~~NO DAY BUT TODAY~~~
jeff's picture
yup
You keep the books, that's the trade.
Yeah, Canada's fine. Not sure what to do about international stuff, though. Could cost more than it's worth, we'll see.
The only stipulation I intend to make is that we aren't going to review erotica or "sex" anthologies. Beyond that, a bit of everything.
As to whether you're OK receiving them, that's your call. I plan to write nothing inside the envelope, etc. Just a book in an envelope with nothing else but whatever the publisher sent me with it.
The Confession
I recall you saying, once upon a time, to say if there was a book one thinks should be reviewed to let you know ... And, I think that The Confession, the memior of Jim McGreevey the ex-governor of New Jersey who resigned after a gay sex scandal that ended in him coming out as a "gay american", is definitly one that we need to review. While it's unlikely that you'll get an interview with him, it's not impossible. He revieled in an interview with Andrew Sullivan that his new raison d'être is helping queer youth (though, he didn't say queer since he was with Andrew Sullivan XD).
I haven't read it all, but I did read a little of it. It looks good.
