I now have a total of about a dozen. There better be a hell of a lot of you working on late submissions or this project isn't going to fly.
Just a heads up.
only a dozen submissions total?? Oh my goodness. Should I submit more?
I thought there would be like a lot more than that. I'll see what I can come up with... Most likely a drawing... :/ I don't feel all to confident in my writting skills in the least.
Just curious... But how is this being published?
are you feeling a little better?
sorry if you made a post telling us you are... I haven't been frequenting the site as much as I usually do.
I know there's "black sheep," but what about rainbow ones?
ReinbowGRl: If you have more, definitely submit more. We really need some prose though rather than just poetry if you'd be willing to tackle it, otherwise we're likely to wind up with a poetry book, which was not really what any of us had envisioned.
Poissonrouges: I happen to think that your writing skills are excellent, and I am a writer after all, so I'd love to have both from you, but it's your decision. As to how we are publishing it, if at all, it will be up to Jeff. If he wants to shop it around to actual publishing houses, then he can, but we will be publishing an edition just for us on lulu.com. If Jeff decides not to shop it out, then we will make it available on Lulu to the general public and I'll see what I can do myself as far as marketing it. The whole thing is being run as a not-for-profit endeavor in any case. If any profits do occur, which is unlikely, they will go to Oasis Magazine.
Come on everyone! The sign up list from earlier has about 50 people on it. Where is everyone? Once again, email me your submissions, preferably prose pieces or artwork, about your life as a gay teen. We're getting a little heavy on poetry, so how about tackling a story? We want autobiographical accounts that illustrate gay teen life. Come on guys; you can do that. You write excellent pieces every day in your journals. Just pick some things that really sum up the theme for you and submit them. We have three top-notch editors standing by to help you polish them.
The address is firstname.lastname@example.org or if that fails, email@example.com. Do we want this project to succeed or not? If so, we need everyone who said they would submit work to follow through and we'd love to have some others on board as well. Because the turnout was so dismal, we'll be leaving the project open for submissions for another two weeks at least, so it isn't too late to finish up something you've started or to even start something brand new.
Thanks to all who have already submitted. If you have more stories, go ahead and submit them. We's much rather have too much than too little.
If we don't have a lot more material in two weeks time, we'll more than likely just call off the project entirely, so it really is up to all of you.

"bringing strong gaycharacters to Sci-Fi & Fantasy"
ok i read the bit about having more prose... I might get some polished up soon.. it's just that I don't reckon they're good enough... like they're so just not convincing or perceptive... oh well but I'll see what I can do with them.
Oh! Jewish Story Time!
Once upon a time, a famous Rabbi was coming to a very poor, very small town out in the backwoods of the Old Country. All the townspeople wanted to give the Rabbi a big barrel of wine. Every family was to donate a bottle of wine and pour it into a barrel to be shared at the Kiddush after the Rabbi said the prayers.
The evening came, the prayers were said, and the Rabbi went to get wine from the barrel. The "Wine" ran clear. It was water.
Every person in the town had thought, "Oh, everyone else will be putting in a bottle of wine. I'll just put in a bottle of water and nobody will know the difference."
So yeah. Everyone has to do their part! Submit a freakin' story!
Whatever I did, I didn't do it.
i submitted a story already and ive posted some of my poetry. i know we have a lot of poetry but if anyone loks at my poems and thnks we should or could use them i'll be happy to submit them. But i could write another story if that's allowed. I dunno i could come up with something. I dunno what the ruling on more then one story is but hey just let me knwo anything i could do to help. Because i think this is an amazing idea. I'm not good at grammar but i enjoy writing so i dunno. I like taking pictures just not sure what kind of art we want.
~~~NO DAY BUT TODAY~~~
If you have written a story already, by all means you can submit another. If you have only submitted poetry, please consider submitting a story or some artwork. We will not go ahead with this project if half of our submissions are poetry. I'm sorry but that was not what the project was all about. Whateversexual_llama's comment above was smack on. Half of the people who have submitted so far copped out by submitting only a poem instead of putting the necessary work into creating a genuinely useful piece. I'm not insulting your poetry, but that's not what we wanted. Poetry was supposed to be the frosting, not the cake itself.
I'm extending the submission deadline to March 15th. I'll officially announce that in a seperate post in a day or two, after I consult with the editiors about what we consider an acceptible ratio of stories, poetry and artwork (of which we have still received none).
I have to say, after all the excitement you guys showed over this project, I am extremely saddened and disappointed by this result. I hope that everyone who signed up in the earlier post will decide to come through and submit a piece that we can use - namely, a prose piece (of 2+ pages would be great) which illustrates your life as a gay teen - the good the bad and the ugly. We will accept no more poetry submissions without an accompanying story. Look for more in the official post, which I'll make on Wednesday at the latest.
Ugh, I know! I feel so bad about being all exciting and doing nothing but a last minute poem :(
So many things, scholarships, college prep, but so little time! But yes, I know, it's all excuses. I need to learn how to make more time.
I need some batteries for my digital camera or find a scanner. I already have past drawings, but there's one that is half way done. I'm not the best at side body poses. I'm trying to do a drawing with 3 people! 3! I've never tried that before. I have one person down. But, no excuses, I poured in water! :(
I'm so sorry Pat. That prose, I'm trying. I just got another scholarship application today. Maybe I'll work on it this weekend. Maybe a little bit during free time in class. But I usually use that time to study. I dunno, I'll figure something out. I'm sorry!
I poured in water! D:
~May the spirits guide your every move...to assure you please her in all the right places XD
I'm working on my story and am going to try to submit it tonight, but it needs editing, I can't get it to flow. But, I'll send in the best I can.
Used to be it was a man's world and a woman's place was in the home...
they can kiss that shit goodbye.
EXCELLENT! We'll be more than happy to help you polish up your piece. That goes for everyone else too.
Mine will probably be submitted in about a day or two, i have to decide on a title and do some editing but its mostly finished :) Its around 5 pages....
im doing a print and a photography piece. the print is definately going to be ready thursday. right now im just waiting for the ink to dry so i can scan it (damn oil inks and theyre drying times!). just to let you know.
Done. Sending it in.
P.S. For some reason I had it in my head that today was the deadline. Oops.
i am still working on it but i have a story i have been working on for awhile... i will definitely have it in by the 15th... thanks so much for the extension!
I can certainly try to come up with some more pieces. I'll really try my best, because I'm very excited for this project, and disappointed that it hasn't gotten great feedback. I'm going to try even harder.
I sent a story today. I have another one that just needs refining and hopefully I can pump out one or two more soon. I've got the ideas in my head I think they're good ideas and areas of GLBT teens that need to be covered but I'm just having difficulty putting it into words.
Remember guys, I need stories about your lives, not just purely fictional stories. If you're going to submit fiction, it needs to be about you or a friend or your gay cousin or someone in real life. I can't use purely fictional stories. This book is a collection of "snapshots" if you will about your lives as gay teens.
Uncertain: I've been thinking about your teen suicide story. Even if it isn't autobiographical, I think we can find a way to use it. That topic does indeed need to be covered. Anyone else with suicidal poems or stories, send those in too. Part of this project is to make parents aware of just how close their kids are pushed to the edge sometimes. I want this book to reflect that side of gay teen life as well.
Thanks for waking up and pitching in guys. I knew you could do it. I feel like we can pull this off if a few more of you will step up to the plate and help. This is an important project and well worth everyone's time, mine included.
Whateversexual_llama: Great job laying on the guilt! It strengthens my belief that there is an appropriate Jewish story for every occasion. :-)
I swear, I love being Jewish because it comes with the lovely ability for Jewish Guilt. ^-^ by the way, everyone, keep that fire under your ass going; I'm going to go read all the stories that've been posted that I haven't read, and if this fire dies down I'll gladly fuel with with more FIRE!
God I'm delirious. ><
I might be able to do a suicide piece but no promises. I'll see what i can figure out. I have the experience i just don't kow how to write it so i'll try and figure it out.
~~~NO DAY BUT TODAY~~~
I never actually signed up for this project--I knew life was gonna get busy soon, and I'd end up "pouring in water"--but I can try to whip something up. It would seriously suck if this project didn't fly. So...I'll try to find something and have it properly polished as soon as possible.
