Extra Skin after losing weight?

dykehalo's picture

So.. i have a random question.. well not that random. So i was watching that show on TLC where they do all that surgery on the overweight/obese people like the gastric bypass surgery and then they are left with all this skin hanging around and stuff.
Is this only because they have lost the weight soooo fast or does it happen anytime people go from almost 300 pounds to 150 175 ish???
Jeff i know you lost ove 100lbs did that extra skin thing happen to you or no?
Or does anyone know?

Well, skin is elastic and

Well, skin is elastic and shapes with your skin. I'm not so sure what exactly happens to people who gradually lose weight. I think it may depend on how big the person was and how fast they lost that weight. I think they may have some extra if they were huge and lost the weight fairly quick, but nothing like the people who have gastric bypass. The skin probably adjusts well.

That was my thought like i'm

That was my thought like i'm not HUGE but i'm BIG. So like i'm thinking if i lose the weight kinda slowly and not like really fast i won't have that skin problem but i don't know. Like cuz i'm almost afraid to lose it if i will have a ton of extra skin just cuz i don't want plastic surgery because then you have the skin removed you have this HUGE scar and it's really gross.

But the surgery doesn't

But the surgery doesn't leave much, if you have a good surgeon. Like I had plastic surgery to reduce the skin that was there from some tumors and they barely have any scars. It's not gross. I personally think reconstructive plastic surgery is awesome.

it's not the plastic surgery

it's not the plastic surgery that i think is gross. It's the scars. I hate scars like they just completely gross me out and want to throw-up. It's weird.

Yup...

I'll need a little nip tuck to tighten my shit up... like, when i stand up, it's pretty good, but when I sit down, it sort of "gathers." Which is why I am *always* standing at clubs. :-)

At your age, you won't have that issue. But the longer you keep the weight on, the more your skin gets used to being stretched out like that, etc., and the less elasticity you have. I think the earlier you get rid of the weight, the better your odds of everything tightening up naturally.

I was debating whether to just tell the surgeon to leave the belly button off (since that is where they cut and tighten), but that might be a bit too freakshow (not to mention I don't want to be called Kyle XY), so I guess I'll get a new one. Probably within 2 years.

Are you considering gastric?

No.. i'm actually rather afriad of any kind of surgery. I'm kinda do it the natural way if i can.. gastric is my LAST option.

there's a kid in my grade

who has no belly button. It's not too wierd looking. I probably wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't told me about it. She was (or maybe she still is) kinda self-concious about it and tried to keep it a secret but everyone found out and knows anyways.

Dropping as little as 10 lbs

Dropping as little as 10 lbs will give you loose skin, it goes away fast though, kinda looks like stretch marks, than it's gone. I went from 190 lbs in 2005 to 120 lbs, losing weight on and off, and I still have a little loose skin on my stomach, but nothing major, so I've been doing 100-200 sit ups a day and that helps tremendously, plus I'm starting to get a six pack ^_^.

Hmm...

That's not getting rid of loose skin, that is filling it with muscle.
