Well, I got six submissions for the Gay Like Me project this time. Kudos to the six of you who made the effort. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, it's not enough to go ahead with the project at this time.
Rather than just abandon the idea completely, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to leave the project open ended. Anyone can submit work (poetry, stories, anything that fits the theme) in one of two ways. Either you can send it to me at email@example.com or you can post it in the Gay Like Me forum. I'll keep an eye on the forum and keep collecting submissions, and when I've finally got enough usable material to put a book together, I'll move ahead. It might take six months, or a year or two years. I'm not going to put a time frame on it since I don't know who's going to submit what when. Just consider it an ongoing project.
For those of you who are new, or who don't remember, Gay Like Me is a project designed to show what life is like as a gay,bi,tran (or whatever) teenager/young adult. Basically, any type of creative work that can be put into a book qualifies - poetry, short stories, artwork...whatever. Submission does not automatically mean your work will be used. The Oasis staff will make the final decision as to what works will eventually go into the project.
All works will be published under your Oasis screen name or another pseudonym of your choice. You cannot use your real name for legal reasons. By submitting your work, you are making it the property of Oasis Magazine and granting us the non-exclusive rights to publish it. You may publish the work yourself elsewhere, but you cannot sell another entity exclusive publication rights (because you have already given us the non-exclusive rights to publish it).
Thanks again to everyone who has made the effort to make this project a success. Eventually we're going to have enough material to move forward. It just wasn't in the cards right now.
Hugs to all,
