Indie music?

utter_insanity's picture

I've been wanting to check out the indie genre of music lately, but I don't really know where to start. The only indie artists I know are KT Tunstall and Ani Difranco, and I'm not really sure whether KT Tunstall counts as indie anyway.

So, does anyone have any indie artists to recommend to me? I'd appreciate it!

Indie doesn't really mean

Indie doesn't really mean anything, or at least it gets used to mean almost everything.

What sort of music do you actually mean?
Literally just anyone not on a major record label?
Or like jangly guitars and droney vocals? Or singer-songwriters? Or what?

utter_insanity's picture

To be honest, I'm not

To be honest, I'm not entirely certain how to define indie, and I don't really know what I'm looking for. Like I said, I'm new to the genre. I'm just asking for people to recommend some bands/singers that they consider indie and like to listen to, because for all I know, I might end up liking them too.

METRIC

I heavily back the Metric suggestion!! Which leads me to recommend Emily Haines [lead singer of Metric who was excellent solo work].

Yeah that is a down song.

Yeah that is a down song. The whole album is bitchin. Golly Sandra's my favorite song by them, I think. Along with Over the Mountains. Eisley's killer, no doubt. Their new songs are good too.

I'm going to try to get tickets for me and my girlfriend to see them play an acoustic set in LA.

I will second electricity's

I will second electricity's recommendation of Death Cab for Cutie, and add a couple myself:
-The Postal Service
-Imogen Heap (I don't know if her music can be considered Indie, but her songs are amazing)

Metric's Good

And Postal Service rocks! ^.^
I'd also recommend the Kooks and Bloc Party...

You should also try

You should also try listening to Imogen Heap a.k.a. Frou Frou (she's got a company in Frou Frou; nevertheless the works are incredible). she's a great lyricist and she's got this avant-garde style, which i really really looovveee...

hmm..

i'm not sure what's already been said.. but at least that way, if you get a few copies of names you can be relatively sure they're something to check out. [and not all of these are the same either, so if you listen to one and don't like it, don't stop for thinking they're the same, necessarily ^^]
Also - If you're not using allmusic to check these out first, you could be. It gives 30 second samples so you can get pieces of the artist's music ^^

The list -
Mirah
Sufjan stevens
Belle and Sebastian
DeVotchKa
The Polyphonic Spree
Broken Social Scene
Spoon
Tokyo Police Club
Mogwai
!!! (and yes, that's a band.. they're strange.. and delicious.. i have no other word for it.)
The Arcade fire
Built To Spill
Wolf Parade
Beirut
Modest Mouse
Quite the list.. heh ^^'

Older stuff

I'm mostly a fan of older indie, but here's a list of albums that are just amazing:
Newer:
"Mirrored" by Battles
"Boys and Girls in America" by the Hold Steady
"Return to Cookie Mountain" by TV on the Radio
"Sound of Silver" by LCD Soundsystem
Older:
"Daydream Nation" by Sonic Youth
"Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine
"Let it Be" by the Replacements
"Double Nickels on the Dime" by the Minutemen
"New Day Rising" by Husker Du
"Telephone-Free Landslide Victory" by Camper Van Beethoven
"Rock 'n' Roll" by the Mekons
"Doolittle" by the Pixies
And finally a few that aren't really indie, but have the same feel and were really influential on indie:
"Unknown Pleasures" by Joy Division
"The Velvet Underground and Nico" by the Velvet Underground
"Marquee Moon" by Television
