Oasis group on FaceBook

Hmm, we never really did much of anything with the Oasis group on MySpace, but who knows... I just created one on Facebook, in case anyone wants to join on there.

Thoughts?

Click here to join (I think).

Also, something to pay attention to on here. I just had FaceBook invite people from my AIM account, and a handful of Oasis people showed up. Many I only knew by their Oasis IDs, some a first name... but on FaceBook, it was like full name, what school they go to, where they live (city, state), etc. So, be careful out there...

My only concern is that if

My only concern is that if you join the group, friends can see and snoop into it and stuff. Especially bad for me since 2 of my brothers are my facebook friends. Especially brother #3 that likes to be extra snoopy and see how I'm doing on "the whole gay thing" and how I'm "overdoing it" and other crap he says. Then he likes to make fun of me (in a very harsh, kinda abusive way) and make me feel bad and then tell my mom so they can disconnect my computer. I hate him.

Hmm...

I can make the group secret or something, if most people would rather that.

I would join, but groups

I would join, but groups just show up in your profile...can't you make it a secret-invitational group? like making requests by messages here and someone sending the invitation or something? Btw, in facebook you can control who sees what of you, so if anyone feels like letting people in the group only see names, and not city and/or school, you can: just adjust the privacy settings.

Two options...

As I'm not well-versed in FaceBook yet, which level of secrecy do we require?

Closed group:
Administrative approval is required for new members to join. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the discussion board, the wall, and photos.

Secret group:
The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Membership is by invitation only, and only members can see the group information, the discussion board, the wall, and photos.

I vote for Secret Group.

I vote for Secret Group. That way, it'll encourage more members (from Oasis) to join the group. And there's no way for nosey family members to go crying to mom and dad and get them kicked off for life (or at least until I move off to college).

And since you membership is by invitation only, members can give you their email address (or whatever needed for the invitation) to you so that we make sure it's all official Oasis members joining the group. So that it's more of a way to know eachother and know that it's the other people we've been talking to. Okay, it makes no sense, but I can't really explain what I'm thinking.

Closed is invitational -yet-

Closed is invitational -yet- it shows up in the left-side Group bar on each member's profile. Secret is like Closed, except that it won't show up anywhere on any user's profile. I vote for secret, but then someone would have to send the invitations to everyone else...which, I guess, could be arranged through the website. Any help you need, just ask, I'm a facebook maniac.

yea is that possible? its hard to join a group and not have people clicking on it wondering what the hell it is.

Well...

I guess. My view is also that it would be cool for people on Facebook be able to find Oasis, but... I guess a lot of people use that as their closet site, so...

You can always make two

You can always make two groups...one for people on Facebook to hear about oasis and for members who don't have a problem with Facebook friends seeing the group, and other one for members who value the group not being seen by everyone.

I suppose...

Just need to eventually get someone else handling the invite-only one then. I'm fine spending my energy helping people come out.... but to stay closeted, not as much. :-)

OOOH, I just figured

OOOH, I just figured something out! If you go to the upper-right hand corner you can edit your privacy settings. Then, you could just make it that no one can see your groups joined. Or, if you don't really mind people knowing, except for a few then you can put it that those individuals only see your limited profile. Then, you can edit your limited profile settings and you could put it that they can't see your groups joined.

I just did that, so problem solved for me. I'm now part of the Oasis facebook group, Yay!

Now the question is, who am I in the group? Ooooooohhhhhh *mysterious music*

jeff's picture

Very cool...

I'd much rather keep the group open and have member shut groups off displaying on their profiles. Much better solution.

I'm really excited about

I'm really excited about being able to hide my groups. I originally starting to try to find a group ON facebook, and then ended up on Oasis. Now, there's both.

Just joined!

Hey, I just joined the Facebook group. Thanks to everybody who contacted me after reading the excerpt of my book on Oasis. Your words of support and encouragement mean a lot to me. Feel free to add me on Facebook, too.

You can also hide

You can also hide groups..... I think I hid mine

I guess

Joining the group would be awesome, but I've also poured so much of myself out on this site, more than I would if it wasn't anonymous. It's not an "I'm-closeted" thing--I'm out on facebook--but more that I'm a bit private, and I've shared a lot of vulnerable stuff here, and I don't want any old kid to be able to read all my entries on here if they knew they were mine. Does that make sense? I don't know. But that's what I'm feeling.
