Gay Field Test!!!!

Fox's picture

So, I saw this speaker today at a PFLAG meeting, my mom dragged me along to, and he was saying something pretty cool which is that a major determining factor in someones sexuality is the amount of androgyn in the womb, gay guys get less, lesbians get more; transversally, women get less men get more. This is one of many things which contribute to sexuality, however, a quick way to test how much androgyn they got is the length of the index and ring finger on their right hand when it's fully outstretched, fingers together, going forward. If the index and ring fingers are about equal than chances are they like guys, if the index is shorter than they like girls. It worked for my family, my mom's and my fingers were equal in length, my dad's ring finger was about a digit shorter. Anyhow, if you like someone you could say you're reading their palm or something, and if they're gay, than you know it's cool to ask about reading other stuff too ===PPPPPP

Eh...

Why am I gay? Can't say I spend a second thinking about it. No reason.

I've seen you respond with

I've seen you respond with answers like this and I completely understand your mentality. Why should it matter why people are gay? The reason really shouldn't affect whether or not glbt people get equal rights. It's barbaric to think that it would take genetic evidence to push pro-gay legislation. That is, sadly the way things are.

On another note, however, most gay people want to know why they're gay. I certainly do. It's not even so I can accept myself, because I already do and my family does as well, but I would like to know why I am the way I am. I want to know what in my genetic sequence makes me this way. I am never satisfied with the "Well, that's just the way it is" answer, and there's no reason why I would be satisfied with that answer in this situation.

I do understand where you're coming from though. It's a noble thought, just not applicable to people like me.

Ive been reading some of the

Ive been reading some of the original research papers that most of these claims are based on ( namely, the research of John Money), and believe that their studies are completely and utterly flawed. Androgen and other hormones lead to genderization of the brain, that's true, but I doubt anyone here would suppose that gender and sexuality are linked. most of the underlying empirical research to support their hypothesis come from case-studies of inter-sexed individuals, not queer people per-say. Its understandable that they would focus on these individuals as a starting point, as up until recently it wasnt known to what degree pure genetics (as opposed to prenatal hormonal influences) influenced brain genderization.

It seems like every few years a new sexologist "finds" "tests" or physical indicators of sexuality, however unfortunately when these hypothesis are disproved that news doesnt travel as fast as their finger studies.

what do you think? (sorry if this reply is more than you bargained for, its just that this is pretty much all ive been reading about over winter break, and ive been dying to talk to someone about it.)

(also, my index and ring fingers are exactly the same lengths, but im very much a lesbian.)

Fox's picture

Well... I think the theory

Well... I think the theory of hormones kind of makes sense if you think about it. Science has proven with every son a mother has, her chances of having a gay one go up, so genetics can't be the only factor, and sexuality is determined by birth, so genetics, and something that happens in the womb are the two major factors, and the hormone part makes sense because many gay guys are naturally more effeminate, and many lesbians are naturally more butch leading one to the conclusion that if you get more androgyn you're more masculine butch whatever and you wanna be with chicks, you get less you're more effeminate and prefer guys. not saying this is the reason all people are gay, I think there are many different factors that make someone gay and this is just one of those doorways

Too bad there aren't any straight guys on here to use as a control.

If this were true, I would

If this were true, I would definitely be lesbian, mine are quite different.

But my faith in these things is rather low. Maybe as a bit of an indicator, obviously proves true in some cases, but there's too much variation within the GLBTQ community for anything like this to be entirely true.

wilma wonka's picture

ummmm

my index fingers are a tiny bit longer than my ring fingers but i like girls and i'm fairly masculin. With such a broad statment you can usualy find someone who proves it true and a lot of people who disprove it. For example: i have brown hair, does that mean that all lesbians have brown hair or that only lesbians have brown hair, no, of course not, unfortunatly.(brown hair is sexy;) I wish it were just as simple as how long your fingers were, it'd get rid of questioning your sexuality and homophobia (cuz you obviously don't choose the length of your fingers)

My index finger is quite

My index finger is quite shorter than my middle one... it depends on a family, my fingers are very long but in proportion, but very slender...it runs in my famile.

Hmm

It worked on the humans in my house...but my cat and dog both have their little index paws/fingers shorter than their ring paws/fingers, and they don't seem to distinguish with gender. It helps that they've been spayed.

???

I don't know what I believe about this study, I mean my two fingers are the same length but at the same time so is my dads and 1 brothers (both of which *I assume* are hetero) but my other brother had different lengths and he's...well he's a beast. So yeah I don't know, maybe family genetics play a larger role than the amount of androgyn

Sorry, but...

this study is completely false. The length of fingers has nothing to do with your sexuality. They're just grasping at straws.

haha!

my friend told me about this a while ago. it's true for me, but i think it's funny! i don't really believe that it's an indicator to who's gay and who's not, but it's interesting to look at people's finger lengths and see what it shows. haha!

I wish this were a reliable method of finding out someone's sexuality, but unfortunately it's not. It did work on me, though, which is amusing.
