Trans?

Alright, so considering what website this is, i will now make myself sound utterly retarded and ignorant.

I dont quite understand/know what being transgender is. I dont really know what exactly makes you trans, or why your not just gay or whatever.

I feel like although i have a female body my mind has always wished to be a guy, and that i would always prefer to be the 'guy' in a situation, and always pretty much act that way, although i look female, but wear generally all clothes from the guys department, except my jeans, which as from the girls, but still very loose. does that make my trans?

i know i sound utterly retarded here, but maybe someone here is willing to enlighten me so im not quite so retarded anymore. any takers?

Aww, it's okay. The whole

Aww, it's okay. The whole gender/sexuality/everything else subject is really complicated and confusing at times. And it's not your fault for not knowing really. I'm not really good at explaining things but I'll have a go at it.

There's a huge difference between trangender and gay... Transgender is when you feel like somethings wrong with the sex you were born with, and the gender you were assigned at birth. And sexual orientation is who you're attracted to (normally described relative to your own gender.) It's possible to be transgender, Female to male for instance, and still attracted to boys. They're different things.

And it's also possible to be gay and completely happy with your gender. And while I'm at it, it is also possible to be completely straight, completley happy with your gender, and still enjoy cross dressing.

Anyways, I think what I'm trying to say is that gender doesn't have much to do with who you're attracted to, or vice versa. As far as whether you're transgender yourself, That's something you'll have to figure out.

I hope that cleared things up for you. ^^

I'm hardly the most

I'm hardly the most knowledgeable person on this subject, but I have a friend who's FTM trans, so I'll try to explain what he told me.

Sex and gender are two different things. Sex is determined by your body. If you have a vagina, your sex is female, and if you have a penis, you sex is male. Of course, this gets complicated when genitalia is ambiguous, but most people are born either physically male or female. Gender is determined by your identity, by which I mean what you feel is right. It's your innate knowledge of whether you are male, female, both, or neither. In most people, sex and gender are the same, but in some, they are different. Someone might be born physically male, but in their mind, they are really female. My friend's sex is female, but his gender is male. When gender and sex don't line up, someone is transgender.

Gender is as impossible to change as sexual orientation. Sex can be changed with surgery and hormones. You don't have to want or get surgery or hormones to be transgender.

Like Riku said, you're the only one who can know whether your trans. If you want to read a really good book on the subject, try Luna, by Julie Peters. It's the story of a kid who was born as a boy called Liam, but knows that inside she's really a girl called Luna. It's told through the eyes of his/her sister. The story is fictional, but it's beautifully written. You should try it.
