Where did all the queers go?

will's picture

According to The World of 100, a good many 10% of the global population is gay. That is 10 times the number of people who have HIV or even a college education!

Does that mean in a classroom of 30 students, 3 people, give or take, should be gay? But why do I feel like I'm the only one?

Where did all the queers go?
I wonder...

10% is the "general wisdom"

10% is the "general wisdom" statistic, but actually in my university classes (psych, education, etc) I keep coming across the more "scientific" statistic that says 2-3%. This statistic combines all the research conducted on the GLBT population over the past few decades, mostly composed of widespread surveys.

2-3% actually seems more accurate to me, even if I'd rather it be 10%.

See. I have a theory:

See. I have a theory: independently of the number, gay people concentration should be studied geographically. For example, where I live the gay population must be of around .01%, while -say- in San Francisco or NY it must be around 10%.

That's a smart theory! But

That's a smart theory! But then we might run the risk of having people claiming that some social climates create more gay people than others.
