ideas for GSA activites

tenmilestilts's picture

So, I was really psyched to join GSA this year, and of course really proud of myself for going, but we haven't done *anything* this year. We literally have not. Actually, that's not true--we made posters for Coming-Out Day, but the leader never put them up. And that's kind of the issue--the student leader is not doing anything, and our teacher sponsor comes up with ideas but they never get implemented. On top of that, all of the people in GSA are not showing up. We'll have 4 or 5 people each Tuesday even though there are like 20 in the club. It's kind of depressing.

So, I guess what I'm asking is--anybody have any ideas for what my school's GSA could do? I want to actually have a purpose and all...

you couldd

you could talk to your teacher and have a revote on the student leader.. become the leader yourself and take charge.. show people your proud to be gay and they will come to the meetings.. when you have a leader who isnt doing their job it only encourages members not to do theirs..
When life Gives you Lemons, through them back at life and say, "screw you go make your own lemonade!"

that's a great idea, and i

that's a great idea, and i totally would, except for two things:
a) everybody loves the guy who's the current leader
b) i'm not actually out to the GSA...><
but i would love to do that...

I wasn't out either for my

I wasn't out either for my first two years in the GSA - one of which I was president - but this year I'm oresident again, and I've basically come out. Which is actually super-nice. But hang in there Bookworm3x4! Sorry - not a whole lot of ideas. Depends on the club. Other clubs do more participation, but my club likes to talk a lot about current events. Put more emphasis on days, like Day of Silence. One piece of advice - take the initiative! I agree, pulling a coup on the club government might be too hard to pull off, so I say offer to help! If the guy won't put up the posters, offer to help. Kick his ass in the right direction. And if everyone loves him, why aren't there more people at meetings? PM about how it goes.

I think that's a common

I think that's a common issue across a lot of GSA's, we've got a lot of support at my school, but last time, about four people showed up. We're trying to plan a cupcake day. Like, our meeting room is the foods room, too, so we have a kitchen and lots of eats.

So...delicious baked goods with rainbow sprinkles?

teehee...that probably would

teehee...that probably would draw people. =) but the teacher actually gets us pizza every other week and that doesn't even affect attendance. =/

Have a dirty Santa

Have a dirty Santa party...you know what that is? No...ok well each person is to bring a small gag gift and one person brings a nice gift under X cost. Then every one there draws a number and who ever is number one picks a gift from the pile. Then number two draws a gift and if he/she does not like the gift they exchange it with number one. Number three draws a gift and again if they don't like the gift they can take number ones or numbers two gift and so on...when the last number picks a gift he/she gets to take a gift from any one there and then number one gets to do the same. Lots of fun.
As far as getting things done in the group volunteer to put the signs up. Volunteer to head up the party decorations, volunteer to do the things that need to be done. Then enlist some one else that is there to help you. Each time you volunteer, enlist some one else to help you Then do it. That way people will see things are getting done, more will show up since things are now happening, and end result is more people, more fun, more activities, etc, etc, etc. Good luck.

my school's GSA does the

my school's GSA does the SAME thing. last year it was even less productive though (our president was transitioning and always had to go to doctor's appointments). And only like 6 people ever come although, truth be told I kinda like it that way; it's more personal and family-feeling.

You could try seeing some plays ( Laramie Project maybe?) or watching films/documentaries. Other than that I'm out of suggestions. >.<

ooh movies would be a good idea...cept for the whole only-35-mins-of-lunch deal, but that can be worked around =)

hmmmm

well us gays have a nice habit of getting free condoms, then misusing them :) so if you can get your hands on some, then you can have comptioions to see how can blow up the condom the quickest, usign only there mouth. like they unrap it, then put it in there mouth, then using only there mouth, they try to blow it up :)

well, we actually did

well, we actually did something productive today...not during our meeting, we actually all listened in while one girl kind of prank called her mom (loong story that i don't even know the whole of), but during 6th and 7th.

6th is choir for me, but we just did the madrigal faire last weekend, so we're done for the semester pretty much. so during 6th i went and joined a bunch of GSA peeps to update and prettify our display case in main hall. we were stapling up lots of construction paper squares to make a rainbow-ish thing (like, red in the corner, then two orange squares below and on the side, then three yellows, four greens, etc, filling up the whole display case) and i commandeered the stapler and got up in the display case to put all the squares up. so i was having fun with that and all and then they pretended to close it on me (well, they actually did close it, but they didn't lock it), and i put my face on the glass and banged it and was like "aaah, let me out!!" then they opened it and i almost fell out cuz i was laughing. then they closed it on me again and so i started wavin my butt in their faces. all of them just make me feel so unselfconscious. (mostly cuz J, the student head of GSA, was skipping up and down the hallway with a rainbow flag on his shoulders, and after that anything really isn't embarrassing anymore. XD)

haha

last year we basically did nothing, but this year we have a new pres, so she's extremely....enthusiastic about this...haha...we're alot more productive than last year, too...

Hi, I'm a reading Rainbow! :)

haymarket1886's picture

mine was like that last year...

then i took over. now we're putting on the Laramie Project on the Day of Silence and im giving a speech. also, we are checking out white boards and giving people notecards explaining the DoS on that day. also im thinking that we should make a fundrasing event over the summer (a 5k race? me and one other person in GSA run xc), also some schools put on an annual Rainbow Festival, but to do that you might want to get together with other school's GSAs so you get more support and help with such a big event. And there's always pride week, get a bus going to take kids to the pride parade and other events on that week. last year my GSA got in the parade, try that?... visit local support groups as a field trip... it takes hella organizing to do some of this, but its worth it
