Wow! A lesbian singer whose music I actually like

I love that song.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a rare moment where I actually like an out lesbian's music. I'm not into Tegan and Sarah (gasp!), Indigo Girls, The Gossip, or Melissa Etheridge. And generally I hear people stereotype lesbians as folk lovers, and I can't stand folk! I'm more into rock/hard rock.

Anyways back to the reason I posted this. I just heard about this woman, Kaylah Marin, and she's apparently a totally out lesbian. So, I thought I'd just check out her hit song, and I actually really like it. One lesbian's music that I actually like. This is very rare indeed. :)

How are Melissa Etheridge or The Gossip stereotypical folky lesbian musicians?

I don't think the issue is that you don't like lesbian musicians, but that you barely know any. A lot of straight people could come up with that list.

I just threw up the obvious choices because they are the ones that everyone knows. I do know quite a lot of lesbian musicians even some obscure ones, but they just don't appeal to me all that much. Although, I'm sure there are plenty that I don't know, and even some that I would like that I just haven't been exposed to.

Anyways, it's more about the fact that every time a website (afterellen!) blogs about some new lesbian artist, I'm really not into them. They aren't my kind of music. But this one lady happened to surprise me tonight. :D

*Also I wasn't saying that Melissa Etheridge and The Gossip were folk singers.*

If lesbian singers are what you're after.....

May I recommend:

Zoe Boekbinder (kind of folksy, but more old-school-poppy)
4 Non Blondes (One hit wonder in the 90s with "What's Up?", only released one album, but it's a daaaayum good album)
Linda Perry (of 4 Non Blondes)
Frou Frou (haven't heard much of her music, but my friend likes her)

I'm sure there are more, but none spring to mind

Thanks for the list

I'm always open to suggestions. I love my music :)

I'm definitely going to give them all a listen.
