Why are matrices cool?

swimmerguy's picture

When there's action movies like The Matrix or other movies that continuously refer to matrices, why do they do that?
Doesn't everybody know that real matrices are incredibly boring and are simply ways to quantify large amounts of information?
Is it just because they have cool names?
Is there something I'm missing here???????????

Name

I really think it's just because Matrix, etc. sounds really cool and high-tech or whatever. It's also kinda fun to say.

its a very...

unique word. it sticks in your mind, and when you hewr it, you dont think of number streams, you think of poeple in trench coats fighting in slow motion with fire arms. its kinda like "spetznaz" once you hear it, it wont ever leave your brain

"A loving man and woman in a committed relationship can marry. Dogs, no matter what their relationship, are not allowed to marry. How should society treat gays and lesbians in committed relationships? As dogs or as humans?"

?

1. What's spetznaz?
2. Nice quote.
9. I like nine.

hehe

spetznaz are crazy elite russian soldiers. i read about them today, its pretty insane the trianing methods they use.

"A loving man and woman in a committed relationship can marry. Dogs, no matter what their relationship, are not allowed to marry. How should society treat gays and lesbians in committed relationships? As dogs or as humans?"

Spetsnaz!

Google strikes again! Yeah, those people are crazy... but it's spelled spetsnaz, which isn't nearly as fun.

ferrets's picture

dont...

shoot holes in my fun.

"A loving man and woman in a committed relationship can marry. Dogs, no matter what their relationship, are not allowed to marry. How should society treat gays and lesbians in committed relationships? As dogs or as humans?"

I'm sooo sorry

Actually, several people have accused me of 'killing everything they say'. They also accused me of being in denial, which I'm not.
(joking)Let's just pretend it's spetznaz.

hehe

kiddin :) thanks for correcting me, i already spell enough things wrong :)

"A loving man and woman in a committed relationship can marry. Dogs, no matter what their relationship, are not allowed to marry. How should society treat gays and lesbians in committed relationships? As dogs or as humans?"

Well yeah but

Was it just like "okay, we're making a REALLY COOL action movie, and we need some REALLY COOL word to name it. Hmmmm... "Matrix" sounds about right. Now, let's just incorporate this random word into the whole movie and pretend it actually makes sense and we'll call it SCIENCE!"

Basically, yes.

That's probably true for most matrix-related movies, but it could be related for The Matrix, with the whole storing-information, they probably thought it sounded right and had juuust baaaarely enough connection. Just my thoughts. What made you think of that to put in a journal, anyway?

swimmerguy's picture

Well

The Matrix was such a cool movie, and when in 7th grade we found out that matrices are actually mind-numbingly boring, and it was a real letdown for me.
It's just, no movie can be cool that actually has anything to do with matrices.

welll

the matrix does have a good plot, and the matrix part makes sense to me.

Okay, I'm obviously a complete geek...

Because when I read your question, 'Why are matrices cool?' my first thought was They're not. I thought you were being even geekier than I am and actually liking those dreadful mathematical matrices. But no.

Okay... So, a matrix can be one of those dreadful mathematical things, or it can be that thing from that movie, or it can be anything that encases, connects, and generally webs-together anything else. For example, the worthless stone in which precious stones are encased in the ground is known as the matrix. The movie uses the term Matrix for the network of technology and whatnot that binds and connects the human batteries and the machines they power and all that. And the matrices in those dreadful maths problems web all the numbers together. I think the word comes from Latin and is somehow related to mothers, but I could be completely wrong.

So the word is used in a relevant way, but yeah, the real reason for it is that it's just a cool word. Ending with 'x' and all.

Thank you!

I thought I must be missing something... There's no way THE MATRIX could have anything to do with something like matrices, or Cramer's rule or something.

Etymology!

Okay, I looked it up.

Matrix, matricis is Latin for pregnancy, or womb, or something like that. That comes from Mater, which means mother. (That part I knew beforehand.) It was originally recorded in the 1500s as meaning embodiment, or some such thing. The meaning changed subtly, but it did sorta come from the Latin word for mother.
www.etymonline.com Wow, a useful site for word freaks like me :)

Wow!

Anyway, my take:

Matrix implies a simplified (albeit non-intuitive) scheme for solving an otherwise complex problem.

just saying

the way matrices are cool is because of the matrix. it's "cool looking" and "awesome". i just see them and think "hmm, reminds me of my Tandy 1000HX". to answer the question, simply, Hollywood Glamourization.
