Image concerns...

Just wanted to make sure people are aware of new technology out there, so you all could take any precautions necessary to protect your identities on Oasis.

If you haven't tried it out yet, Google has a new image search capability. When you go to the Google home page and click Images, you are given a normal image search bar. But the new bit is that you can drag and drop an image onto the search bar and it will also search for that image elsewhere on the web.

So, if you grabbed a school picture that is available on your school website, your Tumblr page, your Facebook (if it is available to the public), etc., all of these can technically get linked together if the same photograph is on all of these sites.

Definitely not a good thing for people in the closet, or people who just don't want anyone to be able to link their online accounts to one another, etc. And, unlike the profile pages on here, which we can tell Google and other search engines not to scan, this is slightly different, as anyone can grab a photo and see if it appears elsewhere online.

Do with this information what you will. I just wanted to put it out there.

The safest bet seems to be using a unique photo for Oasis that appears nowhere else online, even in a different lighting/background than other pictures you've taken.

Just a heads up.

I'm not suggesting this technology has only nefarious purposes, of course:

Hmm.

Nefarious indeed.

Wow

That's cool. But what is the practical application of this? And how does it recognise the images?

jeff's picture

Lots...

Like you're traveling through a foreign country, take a picture, and can later possibly identify the building and its history. They go through a few options on the Google video....

I'm not opposed to new technologies ever, just making sure people know to stay one step ahead of them. It is fairly recent that an image could be used as the basis of a search.

As to how...

They don't say, of course. But this is the trajectory, either way. Apple sorts my pictures for me automatically, as it knows who my mother is, who my nephew is, etc. Does a decent job at it.

Regrettably...

This is the world as it has evolved.

It's indeed sad that we have to be so cautious at every turn...

Perhaps We Should Leave's picture

On a serious note...

Have we ever not? Our community has always been one characterized by a need for caution and secrecy, has it not? Unfortunate, yes, but nothing new.

Well...

Technology always introduces new risks with every advance, goes with the territory.

I agree elph...

Modern Social Media scares the shit out of me. literally. least the new show on AMC has taken the search heat off my username on here. You used to enter hellonwheels, and it would come up w/ my journal second hit...now, thanks to that new show, it doesn't come up, even past page 13. haha. awesome.

Mental wounds not healing, driving me insane, i'm goin' off the rails on a crazy train- the ozzman

Umm...

That would only be an issue if your actual name is hell on wheels. That's kinda the point of having a username, no?!

This wasn't...

directly related to socialist or anything. Just meant to post this on here in general, and his picture reminded me, so I ran with it, heh.

If Jeff's posted example...

...shows Google's attempt to match socialist's pic with others found on the net... I'd say we've got little with which to be concerned!

jeff's picture

Well...

It isn't supposed to be facial recognition (yet). But if socialist used the same picture with the same file name on his tumblr, and on Facebook, etc., I have to imagine Google would make short work of it.

You wont believe me but I've thought of it so many times ! It will be so much useful , like whos this ... and then done ! You know who he is ;) BUt i think that there should not be people there who are not adults and who havent agreed to the termns and conditions about having their photos and data uploaded and saved there , thats all. I think its all about privacy , otherwise google would have already added something like that ;)
