In which I get mistaken for the opposite sex. Again.

A few days ago I was at the supermarket with one of my guy friends. We were headed toward the checkout lanes with our armload of donuts, when one of the employees began to speak to me.

"Was it a dare?"

(Was what a dare? What is she talking about?) "Huh?"

"Was it a dare? The makeup?"

(What's wrong with my makeup? It's only eyeliner and mascara.... it's not outrageous or anything... is it smeared down my face? Is it-- wait. She couldn't possibly think...) "Um... I'm a girl."

"No, REALLY?" (Her face contorts into an expression of awe)

She then spends about 5 minutes telling me the reasons she mistook me for a guy. I have eye makeup, long, girly earrings, and bracelets on. This happens all the time. About 90 percent of the time, people think I'm a 12 year old boy, rather than a 17 year old girl. It can be quite awkward, especially if I correct them then have to listen to them apologize uncomfortably for as long as they can. I left, embarrassed, and spent the entire drive home thinking of possible responses I could have made to her.

An interesting turn of events though: The next time I went to the same supermarket, she gave me her phone number and suggested that we go see a movie together. We've been texting for the last week and a half, and she's actually pretty cool. This is by far the most... unexpected thing that has happened as a result of me getting mistaken for a male.

You had on makeup and

You had on makeup and earrings and she still thought you were a guy? That is odd. If there is someone I really cannot guess the gender of I just don't mention it. It's cool that she gave you her number, though hahaha.

I have never been mistaken for a guy. I am really short, like 5'3" and I have long hair, and I dress like an average girl.
