She wasn't intentionally being mean, but I think I still have a right to be totally fucking pissed.

I am supposed to be doing some ACT math prep for tomorrow, but I just have to tell you guys about what my history teacher said today. As most of you know, Mrs. History Teacher and I seem to go through phases regarding our opinions on one another. Lately we have been okay. She seems to have gotten over her fear/hatred of atheists, or whatever the hell her problem was.

So, yeah, we were talking about gay marriage for some reason. I think someone brought it up. She had her usual "Oh, I don't know, marriage is so wonderful BUT TRADITION OH NO!" stance on the issue. Whatever, right? Just so long as she isn't hating, it is fine by me. Well, uh... She ran her mouth a little too long today. She legitimately didn't mean to, I don't think. I think this was just plain ignorance rather than malice, but it actually did hurt my feelings a little.

"You know, I don't know why it is such a huge issue. I mean, it isn't really logical to think all gays chose to be that way. They aren't doing anything BAD, really."

Is that... Is that rational thought!? Well, I am most impressed!

"I knew a gay man once! He and his, ummm... buddy... were great."

His buddy, huh? Can't say his boyfriend/partner/husband. Nope, this man is his BUDDY. Maybe you should stop before this goes sour...

"Same thing with the women, though, right? I mean, it isn't like a woman just wakes up and says, 'Today I will be a dyke, but tomorrow I'll go back to being a regular pretty girl.' I just don't think you can choose your sexuality like that."

Oooh, you should really have stopped while you had the chance. Ouch. Good message, piss-poor wording. THAT hurt my feelings right there, teacher. I am a lesbian, but I personally am NOT a dyke, if we are using the definition of that I was always taught, and are you even aware how offensive words like that can be depending on who says them and in what context!? A lesbian calling herself a dyke is not offensive, but a heterosexual lady using the word to... say what she said... is just not okay! The way she said the entire thing basically implied that no lesbians can be pretty. Dude, what the fuck!?

I very rarely get offended at things like this. I would say I have really thick skin about this subject due to all the torment I endured when I was 12-15. But hearing a teacher say a thing like that was just awful! You know, I am not that easily offended, like I said, but there IS one way to get under my skin and quick, and that is to insist that only the ugliest of chicks can be lesbians.

I probably would not have gotten very offended if she had, you know, said heterosexual instead of pretty girl, or whatever, since that is actually the opposite of lesbian! But she implied that one cannot be both attractive AND a lesbian. That is the shit that makes me mad. I don't like when people imply that all lesbians are gross-looking because it usually means they think we "became" this way because no guys would like us, not because we legitimately like girls. And I am not ugly! I was convinced I was until I was 15 years old, and NO ONE is going to make me think that again, especially when it hasn't even been three whole years since I stopped thinking it! This chick isn't ugly either, and she is a lesbian. She is somewhere close to my age, like 18 or 19, and she ran for Miss California recently. Oh, and let us not forget the world's most gorgeous woman... who just so happens to also like the ladies! And those are only the first two examples I thought of. I bet I could find dozens more, so there.

I really don't think the teacher meant any true harm, though. I mean, her basic message was very good, but I think she just had a moment of failure right there. But I am just sensitive about that one subject because I had issues with my appearance for years, and I just do not want anyone even so much as insinuating that I am ugly because of something as insignificant as that! That is not a thing that even has anything to do with my appearance OR personality!

Oh, and get this... Teacher thinks she has a good gaydar! Uhh, clearly NOT! Hahaha!

I don't really know why I

I don't really know why I was so mad last night. I think I was tired and stressed out that I can't find my money.

Anyway, you are way out of line. Like I said, I rarely get offended over this kind of thing, but she accidentally touched a raw nerve because I used to have a LOT (and I mean A LOT) of self-image issues that I have only just now gotten over in the past couple years. I don't think my history teacher is evil or bad or anything, I just think she accidentally said something dumb and offensive. I mean, it happens to everybody at some point. I know I've said ignorant shit before at some point too, but that doesn't make it okay.

Hahaa. I think some people

Hahaa. I think some people don't have the right words to say what they really mean. I reckon it's different for us because we've spent so much time thinking around the issue, but a lot of people are still really naiive about what offends and what doesn't.

I guess if you've never been on the receiving end of the word "dyke" when it's meant in earnest, you might not know about it :P

I'd say the important thing is that her underlying message was positive, and to not quibble over the little details. Then again, if no-one corrects her, how is she supposed to learn? xD

Yeah, at least she had a

Yeah, at least she had a positive message. I am normally not so anal about words, but I don't know, the way she said it just made me really mad. I will give her credit for the basic message, though. That is more progressive than probably 90% of the people around where I live.

Oh my, she is

Oh my, she is beautiful!

Concerning your teacher's statement, wow. It's nice she's reaching out and showing she understands the general concept of not being capable of choosing one's sexuality. That is progress.
Dyke vs regular pretty girl, though? Hmm, that's a little limiting. She probably didn't assess that one from all angles before she shot it out of her mouth there... Anyway, I may be a liiiiiitttle biased, but gay girls automatically get 10 points towards pretty as far as I'm concerned, solely on their sexuality haha ;)

Yeah, I think maybe she was

Yeah, I think maybe she was just being ignorant by accident. She is pretty good at that sometimes...
