November 2000

Hi everyone. I'm Isa, I'm 17 and I'm a lesbian. I haven't come out to anyone. My circumstances are not exactly ideal. I'm a senior in high school, 7th child of 8 in a strict Roman-Catholic family, and, worst of all, my best friend of 5 years is not what you'd call...comfortable with issues of different sexualities than those presented by her church.

In fact, she's so uncomfortable with them that every time a movie even mentions any type of homosexuality, even in passing, she has to say something. *sigh* I can't wait to go to college. I mean, I'll miss her, but I won't miss the constant pressure of hiding what I am.

It's not that my friend is a *bad* person. I know she loves me, and I know she'd try to accept me. But I also know that, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't overcome years of her christian sermons. It was hard enough for me.

Next year, when I'm living away from home, away from expectations, who knows what will happen? No one. But I'm definitely looking forward to it.
