January 1999

Victoria, is thirteen in the eighth grade, and goes to school in New York.

I'm stuck. Circling around in the same one track frame. Please guys don't take this the wrong way, but I hate men. Not all men, but a lot of them. I can't blame myself for that. Still I know lots of women who find the need to have a man. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, most of my friends do, but I just don't understand what they see in men.

It is pretty scary to me that we go around wanting what is destroying us. In a male dominated world a lot of women are looking for some one to lead them. That's not going to get us anywhere. I'm not trying to blame men for everything, because there are a lot of good men out there. However, there are a lot of chauvinistic, sexist assholes out there too. There are lots of women who have taken a stand in demanding equal treatment, but for those of you out there shying away you MUST take a stand.

Don't be intimidated. I complained to my gym teacher because the guys were totally ignoring us while having their own little game of basketball. There wasn't even a point in us being there. So I told my coach we were being excluded and we wanted in on the game. She said she would talk to them and tell them they had to have at least one pass to a girl. That's it. One pass!! Even my coach was intimidated. It was very sad for me to see this because I know I'll have to deal with it many more times throughout my life, but you can't count on other people to get you where you want to be. I figured that out.

So I went back into the game and blocked the guys and told them I wanted to be passed to and it was a small improvement. It just helped me to learn that I have to stand up for myself and be proud of my womanhood because if I don't no one else is going to do it for me. I'm not just saying this to women either, guys if you know women (and there are lots of them just like men) that are really sexist don't be intimidated. Stand up for your right!! If we keep fighting for our own rights maybe someday there really will be equality. But we'll never know if we don't strive for it!

Ok, I've vented. Thanks for listening. If you want to talk or e-mail I'm at Cyrano89@aol.com.

Happy Holidays to everyone.
