Olly

April 1999

Poof, nonce, fag... that's what you are. That's what I am. But why? This is something that has been playing on my mind more and more in the past couple of weeks. The question is not: Why am I gay? But rather: Why am I hated for what I am?

I am a lot of other things as well. I am male, I have brown hair, I am 6'3, I have a good sense of humor, I have skills, I have things about me that no one else has. I am someone. But I'm gay -- therefore I'm nothing. Worthless. A freak. I don't think that, but if that's what everyone else thinks then it must be right, yeah?

For some reason I've noticed it much more recently. Whenever something in my school is bad, its not 'crap,' 'rubbish,' 'shit,' or whatever. Oh no. No, no, no. 'Don't the Spice Girls just piss you off so much?' 'Yeah, they're so gay.'

No one, but no one, says 'nigger' these days. And why is this, because it is a disgusting, evil word and people can see that. No one agrees with racism, but most people agree with homophobia. What's the difference? Black people didn't chose to be black, gay people don't chose to be gay.

Notice the use of the word PEOPLE in that paragraph. We're all people, we all suffer the same when we're insulted, offended or hurt emotionally or physically. Some people can cope better than others--but we all suffer. Somehow, I think that is forgotten when the innocent are being tormented by the guilty.

Hitler tried to create the perfect world. He tried to eliminate those who didn't fit into his ideals. He failed. We are all different. And imagine if we weren't. We'd all look the same, think the same, do the same things... we'd just be a load of clones. What a boring place.

Homosexuality has been around forever. It is not a new thing, it was not invented. It is well known that the Romans knew and accepted homosexuality. So why has homophobia come back now? I think it is because people are scared of difference. We see this around us every day. The short kid gets picked on, the quiet kid gets laughed at, the spotty kid gets poked fun at, the out gay kid gets his head kicked in.

Homophobia WILL die out, it's just a matter of time. The fact is that it takes time. Racism died out when people realized how stupid it was. Life is short, there is not enough time for hate--the sooner this is learned the better.

Perhaps we can help homophobia die out. But how, any ideas I'd love to hear them. Please send me loads of mail about this article to me at ozomaniac@youvegotmail.com, as you can see I got rid of the old hotmail one because it was too slow and crap! Also, you may recognize the omaniac bit from someone else's email address! SORRY, I've been ozomaniac long before I got the internet!

I'm afraid I was in quite a depressed mood while writing this. I hope this doesn't show too much! Next month an exciting column on something cool instead of a deep, thought provoking thing! Until then, have a brilliant month. Remember, it takes more muscles to frown than smile, and laughter is (look, I'm being serious here) supposed to help prevent problems like high blood pressure, cancer and stuff like that!

Olly!
